From King to Kendrick: Travailing through protest music as a way to a Beloved Community
Dr. ML King s speaks in his last published book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community of a Country that must seek to revive and reestablish a sense of self-love and love of others through service. Part of what service does is to provide a humbling mechanism that places others over you. Kendrick Lamar, a Grammy-Award winning (and likely multi-Grammy award-winning by the time of this visit) in his rap corpus of music provides an Urban message of Hope, Love and Victory through Self-Love and Love for Others. Through his songs “Be Humble”, “Love”, and “We Goin Be Alright”, Kendrick has picked up the important elements of the Black Music tradition, from Spirituals to Protest Song and now to Hip Hop.
